Cheteshwar Pujara had earlier hit 90 runs in a 149-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer for the fifth wicket. Taijul Islam took three wickets, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz striking twice.
India were reduced to 112/4 by Bangladesh after they made a strong start by collecting three quick wickets and then dismissing the aggressive Rishabh Pant.
KL, the interim skipper for India in the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh, won the toss and decided to bat first.
Bangladesh's first game-changing breakthrough came from Taijul. For a score of 20, Shubman Gill was forced to leave. On the stumps, the ball was fuller, and Gill attempted to play a sweep stroke.
The session belonged to Bangladesh and their spinner Taijul, who seized two wickets, including Virat Kohli. Pant and Pujara contributed 37 runs off only 39 balls to assist India in making a slight comeback.
The ball stayed low, contributing significantly to Pant getting an inside edge onto the stumps. He got off at 46 off 45 balls. India were four down at this point.
Since Pant left, Bangladeshi spinners have made it difficult for India to score runs. The hosts made a strong recovery after Pant had put them in a difficult position despite India losing some important early wickets.
For the fifth wicket, India had added 62 runs thanks to Pujara and Iyer, giving them control of the match once again.

At 259 for 4 for India, Iyer might consider himself extraordinarily fortunate because he was gone for all the money, but his luck has kept him alive.
Edbadat Hossain hit the stumps with a good length ball that stayed low and passed Iyer's defence. All of Bangladesh's players burst out cheering for a brief period, but their delight was short-lived because the bails did not go off.
Khaled Ahmed took the final wicket that fell on the first day. KL Rahul, India's stand-in captain, won the toss and chose to bat against the Shakib Al Hasan-led team.
