Australia Vs Sri Lanka 1st Test: Aussie got a new all-rounder in the form of Cameron Green
A 101 vital lead by the end of day 2 has put Aussie in confidence for day three, all credit to the newly re-born all-arounder Cameron Green’s responsible innings
Usman Khawaja and the heroic execution by Cameron Green brutalized Sri Lanka as the Australians chased down their first innings total to end the trail of 114 runs from Day 1. Skipper Pat Cummins’ late hard-hitting gave the visitors an advantage.
Rain cancels the opening session
The relentless rain delayed the match by 3 hours, and the play finally began during the second session. The Galle was battered by severe weather that led to a grandstand collapsing from the force of the wind.
Another half-century by Usman Khawaja
Despite the pitch mainly remaining covered, significant spin was available from the pitch immediately when the play resumed. Playing against the spin was a mistake made by Travis Head, as the southpaw was caught in a spectacular return catch by Dhananjaya de Silva.
Usman Khawaja added another fifty to his batting total, continuing his dream run. The surface’s continuing spin and bounce posed a challenge for the hitters, but Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green managed to keep the scoreboard moving with sporadic boundaries.
Before being taken out in the first Test by Jeffrey Vandersay, Usman Khawaja appeared to be on track for a big score. Sri Lanka once more demonstrated excellent catching; this time, Pathum Nissanka made a superb catch close in at short leg leading to the dismissal of Usman Khawaja at 71.
Cameron Green- The new saver for Australia
The towering all-rounder Cameron Green was at his best as he propelled Australia past Sri Lanka to give the visitors a decisive lead on day two of the first Test. For the same reason, he has been in the spotlight today.
The team was not in an ideal situation when the youngster Cameron Green made a colossal partnership alongside Alex Carey, who walked in to bat after Usman Khawaja. They made a partnership of 84 runs, which was crucial and turned the game in favour of the Aussies.
Even after Alex Carey was caught out at 45, Cameron Green didn’t stop scoring as he and Mitchell Starc scored 37 vital runs for the seventh wicket partnership.
Cameron Green had persevered while frustrating the Sri Lankan attack after surviving an early LBW scare. He kept the scoreboard moving and made it possible for Australia to reach a total of 313 at the end of the day.
Green’s outstanding innings reached an end on 77 runs when Ramesh Mendis trapped him in his spell via LBW. He was the highest run-scorer for Australia today. The innings he played today came with positive intent as he ensured to put Australia in a dominant position before departing.
Pat Cummins gives the finishing touch
Less than an over after Cameron Green left the game, Mitchell Starc was caught and bowled by Jeffrey Vandersay, giving him his second Test wicket. However, this didn’t stop Cummins from taking risks.
Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins chose to take Sri Lankan bowlers on remand as the Australia lead approached the 100-point mark.
Pat Cummins lashed for every delivery that came his way, aiming his blows at the spinners. As the margin of victory increased to 101 runs, The team’s captain, Pat Cummins, stepped out and unleashed several ferocious hits, including one maximum that left the stadium and hit the streets.
However, poor lighting caused mayhem and forced an early conclusion to the day’s play bringing the match to a halt, due to which that six was the last bit of action of day 2. Day 3 will resume with skipper Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon taking to the crease and attempting to expand the lead further.
