The home team will be the happiest because they are only down by seven runs and still have Travis Head at the bat, who is in excellent form and has already scored 78 runs off just 77 balls.
The Proteas were fast staring down the barrel after being put in to bat by home skipper Pat Cummins on a green-looking surface at the Gabba.
Dean Elgar (3), the captain, was the first batsman out as Mitchell Starc snuffed out the starter down the leg side, followed by Pat Cummins' pluck off Rassie van der Dussen (5).
As he took two wickets in one over, seamer Scott Boland continued his impressive start to his Test career, which has seen him average less than 10 with the ball.
Cameron Green captured Sarel Erwee (age 10) in the gully for The Victorian, who later caught Khaya Zondo for a duck in the same area.
South Africa were 84-4 for lunch, while Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne made some progress in calming the ship's swaying motions.
After the break, the South African team regrouped, with Verreynne, in particular, trying to adopt an aggressive stance that appeared to bear fruit.
The wicketkeeper and Test vice-captain helped the Proteas amass a substantial 98 runs, but Bavuma was removed for 38 by Starc, leaving them on 125-5.
Verreynne advanced above the fifty-run mark before having his innings stopped by spinner Nathan Lyon (3-14) on 64. Keshav Maharaj (2) and Marco Jansen (2) did not last long.
When Kagiso Radaba dismissed David Warner with the first ball of the innings, expertly taken at short leg by Zondo, the Proteas could not have asked for a better start with the ball.
Then, Jansen caught Marnus Labuschagne (11) in good form in the slips

Usman Khawaja (11) was cheaply removed by Anrich Nortje, dropping the score for the hosts to 27-3.
Head emerged with a great attitude, and he and Steve Smith added 117 for the fourth wicket.

However, South Africa had a successful day when Nortje dismissed Smith (36), and Rabada dismissed night watchman Boland with the day's final ball.
