Asia Cup 2022 Championship: Suryakumar Yadav's sky-hits took India to a 40 runs victory
A decent victory by the defending champions, India, and they are the second team in the super-4 of the Asia Cup, defeating Hong Kong by 40-runs
India's bowler quickly defended their total of 192 runs with a disciplined bowling effort from seniors. Even Virat Kohli bowled one over. But the main highlight was the batting star show from Virat Kohli and destruction from Suryakumar Yadav in death over.
India was headed for a decent total of 160-170, but Suryakumar Yadav's destruction in the last overs of the first inning took India from 166/3 to 192/3. Four sixes in the last six balls, and Suryakumar Yadav finished with 68 runs in just 26 balls. Out of these 66 runs, 60 were scored just from boundaries.
In the first part of their inning, India struggled to score fast, mainly because KL Rahul struggled with timing. Virat Kohli held one end and kept scoring, but when Suryakumar Yadav came in 13th over, this started to change.
Virat Kohli had a lot of speculation revolving around his form, but the way he smashed those one-kneed three sixes, fans will be watching those shots on repeat for the next decade.
With his 31st half-century, he is now the highest run-scorer in this Asia Cup, which was also very important for his confidence. His statement to help his team win is visible in every second he spends on the pitch.
Though Virat held one end, Suryakumar Yadav cleared any doubt that might be present for India's fourth position batter for the T20 World Cup. He is India's Mr. 360 and why India scored 72 runs in the last five overs.
"Some of [my shots] are predetermined because this format is about how you prepare when you go in to bat, but it's important to stay in the present when you go out there," said Suryakumar Yadav.
Hong Kong started their run-chase by scoring 50 runs in the powerplay at the cost of two wickets. But Babar Hayat and Kinchit Shah together put on a fight to trouble bowlers.
They targeted the youngsters - Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan for the attack. Indian experienced bowlers, however, held the nerve. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja conceded just 48 runs in their 11 overs. Ninety-seven runs came from eight overs of Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan.
Hong Kong finished on 152/5 after little entertainment from Zeeshan Ali and Scott McKechnie in the end. They scored 33 runs together in the last 12 balls, but the ship had sailed.
India's skipper Rohit Sharma said, "We batted pretty well to start with, and got to a very good score at the end, and came out and bowled reasonably well. Thought we could have done slightly better with the ball. Honestly, the kind of innings that [Suryakumar] played today, the words will be short."
Hong Kong will play its next match against India's arch-rival Pakistan while India will go directly into the super fours.
