Asia Cup 2022 Championship: Can VVS Laxman be a serious contender for the next Indian coach?
VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, will be touring with the Indian side in the absence of permanent coach Rahul Dravid as interim head coach for the Asia Cup. He will be there with the side till regular coach Rahul Dravid recovers from the bout of Covid
A BCCI release on Wednesday said, "Mr. VVS Laxman, Head Cricket, NCA will be the interim Head Coach for Team India (Senior Men) for the upcoming ACC Asia Cup 2022, to be played in the UAE. He [Rahul Dravid] will join the team once he tests negative and is cleared by the medical team".
How has India performed under him?
VVS Laxman has previously worked with Team India on the Ireland tour and 1st match against England in the T20 format. Following this, he headed the team on the Zimbabwe tour for the 50-over format.
Making his debut against Ireland, the team defeated Ireland by 2-0. After this, India won the warm-up matches and the opening T20I against England. Continuing his undefeated stint as interim head coach, the team defeated Zimbabwe by 3-0 in the ODI series. With this victory, he has extended his dream run to 8-0 as the coach.
The next assignment to follow for him as team India's coach is the mega-event of Asia Cup 2022
Though he is quite familiar and has experience with most of the players in the Asia Cup squad Cup, it will be his first stint with the full-strength squad. He has majorly functioned with second-string teams on all his assignments.
The first clash of the Asia Cup between India and Pakistan will be of high value for the coach and team's spirit. He has remained unbeaten in the role of coach for India. If it continued in the big tournament, he might present himself as a serious contender for the next Indian coach.
