Angelo Mathews and Tuba Hassan are named ICC Player of the Month
Former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews has been voted the ICC's Men's Player of the Month for May. In the women's category, the honour went to the Pakistani debutant spinner, Tuba Hassan
Angelo MathewsTuba Hassan earned the award after showing remarkable talent during her maiden international series. The 21-year-old spinner played a crucial role in restricting Sri Lankan batters in the three-match T20I series in Pakistan. She took five wickets in the series with an average of 8.8 and an economy rate of 3.66.
The most memorable performance of Tuba Hassan came in her debut match in Karachi; She took three wickets to help limit Sri Lanka to just 106 runs. She is the first woman cricketer from Pakistan to be named the ICC Player of the Month.
After Tuba Hassan was announced as the winner, former Pakistani cricketer Sana Mir said, "Tuba has shown a lot of confidence and skill to make an impact for Pakistan in her debut series. She has been working hard for some time. It is heartwarming to see her celebrating success in her first series for Pakistan.
Angelo Mathews earned the award for his brilliant performance with the bat for Sri Lanka in the ICC World Test Championship series against Bangladesh. The 35-year-old right-hander batsman scored 344 runs with an average of 172 in two matches. He amassed a massive score of 199 in the draw at the first Test in Chattogram and a brilliant 145 not out in the second Test in Mirpur.
The first Test ended in a draw, while Sri Lanka won the second one. Angelo Matthews played a brilliant inning in the second Test, allowing Sri Lanka to gain valuable points in the World Test Championship. The award made Angelo Matthews the first Sri Lankan cricketer to win the ICC Player of the Month since its inception in January 2021.
Angelo Mathews said after receiving the award, "I am grateful for the opportunity. I wish to thank the almighty, my teammates, support staff, and fans for always believing in me and supporting me. I want to dedicate this to the people of Sri Lanka. Let's never stop believing.
He added, "I am honoured and delighted to be the ICC Men's Player of the Month. I want to congratulate Asitha Fernando and Mushfiqur Rahim, who were front runners for this award, on their spectacular performances.
