Alyssa Healy and Keshav Maharaj named ICC Player of the Month
South African side spinner Keshav Maharaj has been voted the ICC's Men's Player of the Month for April. The honour went to the Australian keeper-batter, Alyssa Healy, in the women's category
International Cricket Council announced the results on May 9, 2022.
Alyssa Healy rightfully earned the award owing to her brilliant performances during the Women's Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. She was selected for the honour following her match-winning innings of 170 runs in the final against England at Christchurch, setting the record for the second-highest number of runs by any woman in ODI cricket and the top score in a match at any ICC global event.
In a press release issued by ICC, Alyssa Healy said, "I am very humbled to win this month's award ahead of two outstanding players. It was great to see Janet Mbabazi's name in the mix after a stellar tri-series for Uganda,"
She further added, "I am looking forward to seeing her name in contention for more ICC Awards over the years to come. Thanks to all the fans for voting and supporting the women's game. It has been a great start to 2022 for our sport; I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year holds.
Keshav Maharaj earned the award for his brilliant performance with the ball in the recent victory of South Africa over Bangladesh at home ground in the ICC World Test Championship series. The spinner took 16 wickets with an average of 12.12 during the series. He proved to be a constant threat to the visiting side, taking two seven-wicket hauls in the Test matches' second innings.
South Africa defeated Bangladesh in the first Test at Kingsmead in Durban by 220 runs and the second Test at Saint George's Oval by 332 runs. Wickets taken by Keshav Maharaj played a crucial role in the 2-0 victory of South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship series.
After receiving the award, Keshav Maharaj said, "I am honoured and privileged to receive the ICC Player of the Month award for April. I want to thank my teammates for helping me win this award. Keshav was thrilled about how South Africa performed this year and he hoped Cricket South Africa will scale new heights.
