Youth Olympic champion Lakshya Sen will train with World No. 1 Axelsen in Dubai
Lakshay Sen will be going to Dubai for eight days to train with World No. 1 Victor Axelsen of Denmark ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham
Lakshya Sen was part of the Indian squad that won the prestigious Thomas Cup in Malaysia. The 20-year-old from Almora, Uttarakhand, submitted a proposal to train with Victor Axelsen from May 29 to June 5 in Dubai to the Mission Olympic Cell committee.
The amount approved by the ministry will cover the cost of his and his physio's boarding, air travel, lodging and an out-of-pocket allowance.
Lakshay Sen is India's established gold medal prospect at the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Once his training in Dubai is finished, Sen will go to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for eight days to train at the Malaysian Training Centre. Lakshay Sen has previously trained with Victor Axelsen at his base in Dubai and will return for a second stint.
In an interview with Scroll, Lakshay Sen said, "There was a lot of off-court and physical training before that, and the time in Dubai was mainly on-court stuff, playing short games, attack vs defence, one versus one... it helped me. Like you could call that my pre-season. Just getting into the rhythm helped me a lot. To play different world-class players for two weeks, with challenging games. It was beneficial,
Indian tennis sensation PV Sindhu also submitted a proposal to get financial assistance for her fitness trainer M Srikanth Madapalli so that he can accompany her for upcoming tournaments.
Both the proposals were approved by The Mission Olympic Cell in preparation for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The request was cleared under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
PV Sindhu is a former world champion and has recently won two Super 300 trophies this year at the Swiss Open in Basel and Syed Modi International in Lucknow. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said. "Kidambi Srikanth will accompany Sindhu during Indonesia Masters (7-12th June), Indonesia Open (14-19th June), Malaysia Masters(June 28 to July 3), Malaysia Open(5-10th July), and Singapore Open from 12-17th July.
