Korean Open: Both Sindhu and Srikant defeated in the semi finals
The semi-finals of the Korea Open didn't go too well for India this season. PV Sindhu, who has been the winner of the tournament in 2017, faltered in the semi-finals and failed to reproduce the same performance in this year's Korea Open.
Along with Sindhu, Kidambi Srikant also lost the semi-finals, resulting in a major disappointment for Indian fans seeing two of the most amazing tennis players of India lose in the same event and at the same stage.
Sindhu and Srikant were the only Indian representatives left in the season and both failed to make their place in the finals. Sindhu was against the home favorite An Se Young in the semi-final. Young hardly gave any opportunity to Sindhu to beat her. Her incredible prowess in the game was evident from the elegance and ease with which she defeated Sindhu. It only took her two games: 21-14, and 21-17 to win over the two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu. Young defeated Sindhu to reach the finals of the Korean Open which is her second consecutive final after the All England Open.
An Se Young will be up against Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in the Korea Open finals. South Korean players have done extremely well at home by featuring in four finals - women’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles this Sunday.
Srikant was against Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the semi-finals. This former world no. 1 tennis player and Silver medalist of the World Championship was defeated by Jonatan 19-21 and 16-21 in straight games. Srikant lost the opportunity to enter an important final to Jonatan Cristie, a young Indonesian player, after winning a silver in the World Championships. Despite having an extremely competitive game with Jonatan, Srikant was defeated in the end taking Jonatan to the finals of the Korean Open. This is not the first time that this young Indonesian has handed a defeat to Srikant. He had earlier defeated Srikant in the semi-finals of the Swiss Open again preventing Srikant from reaching the finals.
Jonatan will either come across Victor Svendsen or Weng Hong Yang in the Korean Open finals of 2022.
