BWF World Championships: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty settle for Bronze
The Indian men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had to settle for Bronze after narrowly losing 22-20, 18-21, 16-21 to Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in a semifinal match on August 27
The World No. 7 duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty wasted their one-game advantage as the Indian campaign at the BWF World Championships ended after one hour and 17 minutes of play.
It was the sixth consecutive defeat of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty against the Malaysian duo, including the loss at the mixed team final of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
After the loss, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy said, “It was a good badminton match. We played close to our 100 per cent. Maybe we could have pushed in the second game itself after we won the first set, maybe we could have put more pressure on them.”
Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will lock horns with Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan of Indonesia in the championship match of the men’s doubles event of the BWF World Championships on August 28.
The Indonesian duo advanced to the final after securing a 23-21, 12-21, 21-16 victory against compatriots Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark advanced to the men’s singles final after securing a straight-set 21-15, 21-17 victory against Chou Tien-Chen of Taiwan.
The 28-year-old Danish shuttler will lock horns with Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the championship match of the World Championships on August 28.
Kunlavut Vitidsarn advanced to the final after beating Zhao Junpeng of China 22-20, 21-6 in a semifinal clash at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.
