Breaking News: PV Sindhu loses to Chen 17-21, 16-21 in Thailand Open
Indian star shuttler PV Sindhu departed Thailand Open 2022 on Saturday after losing the women's singles semi-final to Olympic champion Chen Yufei. Sindhu struck a barrage of errors and went down 17-21, 16-21 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok
The sixth-seeded Indian couldn't utilise her chances failing to pressurise her opponent despite leading in the second game 11-7 at the break. She couldn't hold her drift and ultimately conceded easy points to the Olympic gold medal, who took the lead post-interval and won the match in straight games.
Sindhu's losing streak continues
After becoming the Olympic champion, Chen Yufei successfully notched her first win against PV Sindhu. The 24-year-old now leads their head-to-head record against the Indian shuttler 5-6. Their last meeting took place at the BWF World Tour Finals in 2019, where Chen had won 20-22, 21-16, and 21-12. On Friday, Sindhu put up a good fight in the quarter-final and defeated world number one Akane Yamaguchi, but the Hyderabadi athlete faltered against Chen. Saturday's match marked Sindhu's third successive semi-final loss on tour. The Indian shuttler was ruled out of the Badminton Asia Championships' last-four rounds because of Yamaguchi and Korea Open semi-final, thanks to An Seyoung.
India out of Thailand Open 2022
Sindhu led the women's singles team in India's Uber Cup, where they lost to hosts Thailand in the quarter-finals. Her exit also marked the end of India's campaign at the Thailand Open. Senior campaigner Saina Nehwal and Thomas Cup champion HS Prannoy exited early into the tournament, while Kidambi Srikanth lost before his second-round match in Thailand.
Sindhu has had a decent run in 2022 - she finished third at the Sunrise India Open and won the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow. She exited in the round of 16 of the German Open and Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships, won the Yonex Swiss Open, and lost in the semis of the Korea Open. She won bronze at the Badminton Asia Championships and lost the Thailand Open semi-finals.
