Birmingham Commonwealth Games: PV Sindhu enters the semifinals with a victory over Goh Jin Wei
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu won against Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia after a hard-fought quarterfinal at the National Exhibition Centre to advance to the semifinal in Birmingham
World No. 7 PV Sindhu roared back from a set down to secure a comfortable 19-21, 21-14, 21-18 victory over Malaysian No. 1.
It has the second victory of PV Sindhu over Goh Jin Wei at the 2022 Commonwealth Games after beating her in their women’s singles clash at the mixed team event.
PV Sindhu started the match aggressively and went into the break with an 11-9 lead. The 22-year-old Malaysian shuttler took control of the game with her trademark drop shots to take a 15-16 lead. Sindhu tried to regain control, but Goh Jin Wei clinched the opening game with a barrage of smashes.
PV Sindhu upped her game in the second game by tiring the Malaysian after dragging her into long rallies. She took an 11-8 lead going into the break before clinching the second game to send the match into a decider.
The 27-year-old Indian shuttler continued with her winning ways to win the match after one hour and 17 minutes of intense play to book a semifinal spot. It is the third consecutive time PV Sindhu has advanced to the semifinal at the Commonwealth Games.
PV Sindhu will lock horns with No. 4 seed Yeo Jia Min of Singapore for a place in the championship match.
Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth advance to the men’s singles semifinals
Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth also won their respective matches to join PV Sindhu in the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games.
Lakshya Sen continued with his excellent form to secure a comfortable 21-12 21-11 victory over Julien Georges Paul of Mauritius, while Kidambi Srikanth defeated Toby Penty of England 21-19 21-17 to make it to proceed to the final four.
