Badminton News: Three Golds in CWG and the Thomas Cup
Win shows that the Indian Badminton game is strong at the moment, "We could've done better," says the head coach of the Badminton team
After the Thomas Cup win and three gold medals in the recent Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the badminton fans are pleased with India's performance this year. However, many experts still believe that India can do better and that there is still scope for improvement.
After the Commonwealth Games, the next major tournament will be the Denmark Open, scheduled in October this year. Meanwhile, the team is also preparing for the upcoming Asian Games to be held in 2023 and the Paris Olympics, planned for 2024.
While many are happy with India's performance with a bronze medal in the World Championship and three golds in CWG, Pullela Gopichand, the Chief National Coach for the India national badminton team, thinks we can do better, and there's still scope for improvement.
"We could've done better. Satwiksairaj (Rankireddy) and Chirag (Shetty) are as good as any in the world and it's time they start winning tournaments. They both have an allround game and with the strength they have they can take out any pair in the world at the moment," said Pullela ahead of the upcoming badminton tournaments.
"Most of the matches have been close. There are very few like them and they should be able to make things count," added Pullela.
Meanwhile, Chirag, India's best bet at the upcoming Asian Games, to be held in 2023, also agreed with the head coach that they will get better over time. "We have had a great season and we will only get better. Our on- and off-court chemistry is excellent and that's the key to being a very good doubles team," said Chirag.
PV Sindhu, who stayed out of the World Championship due to an ankle injury, is also recovering and preparing for the following year. Sindhu is, hands down, one of the greatest of all time, and she is one player that India can always depend on for a brilliant performance.
Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen and Prannoy are doing a great job this season. While Lakshya's performance has improved significantly, Prannoy has one of his best seasons.
Talking about Prannoy, Gopichand, the head coach, said, "If we can work on Prannoy, there is no reason why he can't do well in Paris. He has beaten most of the top players and has an all-round game."
While the preparation is going well, and strong contenders are preparing themselves for the Paris Olympics and the Asian Games, there is no doubt that Gopichand is correct in pointing out that the current players have potential and their performance can improve.
