Badminton: Justin Hoh won the Croatian Open,Malaysian shuttler Lee Zii Jia out of commonwealth games
Hong Kong’s Justin Hoh, the National men's singles shuttler, won the Croatian Open on Thursday, June 23
After a meticulous game of one hour and 20 minutes, Justin Hoh finally won the title he had been working so hard for. He beat Nguyen Hai Dang of Vietnam 21-15, 16-21, 21-18 to earn the Croatian Open title.
This is the 18-year-old's second title in a row in one week after winning the Bonn International in Germany on Sunday. This remarkable shuttler had won the semi-finals against Jason Gunawan of Hong Kong only 3 hours before he won the title.
After winning two titles back to back, the 18-year-old Hong Kong champion said, "I came to Europe with an ambition to win my first senior title, but I certainly didn't expect to go back with two." He also thanked his coach, Datuk Misbun Sidek, for pushing his game and helping him achieve two back-to-back titles. With the pace that Justin Hoh is moving, it seems like he will soon be a Badminton star.
Meanwhile, the former All England Champion and the Malaysian shuttler Lee Zii Jia have pulled out of the Commonwealth games. He says that he has a lot on his plate, and to prepare well for the upcoming championships in August, he shouldn't take part in the soon to happen commonwealth games.
In a video posted on Twitter, Zii Jia said, "This is a difficult decision to make because I have played so many back-to-back tournaments and I think my body condition lacks rest and (so) I have to choose between Commonwealth and the World Championships."
Zii Jia will compete in the Malaysian Open to be held between June 28 to July 3, and the Malaysian Masters will begin on July 5. The commonwealth games and the World Championships are scheduled to take place in August, forcing Zii Jia to pull out from one of them. While the commonwealth games are to conclude on August 8, the World Championships will begin on August 22 in Tokyo and end on August 28.
